Following is a list of tips to help keep readers interested and coming back to your website:

1. Common Threads. Most websites have common factors that make it easier for surfers to navigate their specific website. For instance, logos are often placed in the top left hand corner and contain a link, no matter what page you are on in the website that will return you to the home page when clicking on the logo. There is almost always a “contact us” link on every page so that the person viewing can request help if they are unable to locate the information that they are searching for on the website. The last common denominator is the search button. Many websites offer a search button where users can enter content to search on your website. This button is often located in the upper right hand side of the webpage; make it easily accessible to the surfer.

2. Keep It Simple. Keep your content simple but useful. If you include a link on your page, explain the content and what the reader can expect if they click on the link.

3. Leave Off The Blinking Lights. A little bling goes a long way. Consider hiring a professional website designer to help you create your website, especially if design is not your forte. Flashing things that spin and blink are going to scare most people away, not attract them to your content. Sometimes, less really is more.

4. Keep Up With The Content. Readers like to feel empowered after searching for information. If your website provides them with current and relevant information, chances are, those readers will keep returning. Refresh your content on a regular basis, offering new and exciting ideas.

5. Skip The Dog And Pony Show. Flash introductions never seem to go well. The splashy content that they present are almost always a turn-off to users and the skip intro button is the most clicked button on the internet. Flash introductions are slow to load and take people’s valuable time. In addition to the annoyance of the flash introduction, search engines have trouble deciphering the content of your website based on the flash introduction and therefore, you will not get as many hits as your website might deserve.

6. Keep It Consistent. If you keep changing the navigation methods your website, viewers will find it distracting and annoying. They may tolerate it for a bit, but ultimately will jump ship. Pick something and stick to it. If it is not broke, don’t fix it.

7. Give Users Some Leeway. Allow users the ability to change text sizes. Some users may not be able to visually see the smaller font and will be forced to leave your website to find information from another source. Also, give users flexibility with the browser size. Allowing users to view at a resolution that better suits their needs will keep viewers coming back.

8. Keep It Clean. Having your website look neat and tidy is a must. Use easy-to-read fonts and attractive colors. Keep the graphics simple, yet appealing. Simplicity helps viewers navigate quickly and keeps them coming back to your content.
